Insomnia Treatment

Some people might think that weight loss and insomnia are completely unrelated, and sometimes this is probably true. However, there are certain instances when a patient struggling with insomnia will be greatly benefited by losing weight. Here at Lean Healthy Life, Dr. Eric Lane realizes that this is the case, and is ready to work with you to find out if your insomnia might be helped with a weight loss program. Keep reading to see just what we mean.

Insomnia and Sleep Apnea

While insomnia and sleep apnea are diagnosed as two completely separate diseases, many doctors are beginning to believe that they are more related than we once thought. It is believed that anywhere from 40 to 60 percent of sleep apnea sufferers also have insomnia and that their apnea is a direct cause of their insomnia. While many people might think that waking up at regular intervals during the night is simply a symptom of their insomnia, they might actually be waking up because their air flow is constantly being obstructed.

However, to really understand this connection, we should take a look at sleep apnea first.

What Is Sleep Apnea and What Are Its Causes?

Sleep apnea is a condition where your breathing is regularly interrupted during the night. These pauses in breathing can last anywhere from just a few seconds to over a minute and can lead to other complications such as heart arrhythmias, high blood pressure, or even heart failure.

The most common form of sleep apnea is Obstructive Sleep Apnea, and this is caused when your airway is collapsed or obstructed (by your tongue). Often when normal breathing is resumed there will be a loud snort or cough which can lead to the sufferer being unintentionally awakened. Since sleep apnea is often left undiagnosed, it’s not a big stretch to think that your sleepless nights could be caused by it.

Thankfully, all hope is not lost. Since most obstructive sleep apnea is found in overweight individuals, losing weight is a great way to help manage its effects. It may sound crazy, but weight loss isn’t just the key to a great body—it’s the key to a great night’s sleep as well!

It’s this holistic approach to your health and wellbeing that sets Lean Healthy Life apart from everyone else.
